Jamie Carragher sends strong warning to NUFC fans following Amanda Staveley’s takeover bid

Jamie Carragher has emphasised the importance of a takeover to take place at Newcastle United NOW before it’s too late – warning NUFC fans that a change of ownership is vital to keep an ambitious Rafa Benitez in charge of the club.

Last night’s news was a big breakthrough, with the bid breaking the silence on the matter after weeks of due diligence had taken place behind the scenes. The bid from Staveley and PCP may fall short of Ashley’s valuation, but an offer in itself highlights clear progression.

During Sky Sports’ Monday Night football last night, Carragher caught wind of the news that an official bid had been lodged to buy the club – and the former Liverpool legend said the following about the importance of a takeover as far as Rafa Benitez’s future is concerned:

“When Rafa Benitez eventually leaves Newcastle it could be a long time before they get a manager or if they ever get a manager with that sort of CV.

“You think if you want investment and you want to push on, now is the time,”

“Manchester United beat Newcastle 4-1 (on Saturday). Was it the most unexpected result in the world? No. But Rafa Benitez is up against Jose Mourinho. He was playing Champions League semi-finals against Jose Mourinho when we were at Liverpool. He was at that level – going up against Mourinho and getting victories. He won’t want to go there and get beaten 4-1 and he probably doesn’t have the players to compete at that level or even top six.”

“How long – if that continues – if Rafa Benitez got an offer from a team at that level or chasing the Champions League, is he going to stay at Newcastle in that situation?

“He’s not going to want to go into games against some of these managerial rivals with one hand tied behind his back trying to win.

“Losing 4-1 to Mourinho: he won’t be happy with that.”

Carragher makes several valid points here – not forgetting he’ll know Rafa very well, having worked closely with him during their time together at Anfield.

It really is a huge moment for the club. As exciting as a potential takeover is, a failure to agree a deal would be catastrophic for the club on so many levels – with the biggest issue being the fear of losing Rafa Benitez; our club’s biggest asset.

A daunting but very real assessment from Carragher. No takeover could well mean no more Benitez.

We’ve got everything crossed!
