Paul Merson has gone for another NUFC defeat tomorrow, predicting a 2-0 win for West Brom in tomorrow’s crucial encounter at The Hawthorns, but has made some over the top comments about ourselves in the process – claiming Watford could have easily beaten us ‘8-0′ (yes EIGHT) in Saturday’s game at St James’!
Given West Brom arrive on the back of a 1-1 draw with Spurs and our shocking display against Watford on Saturday, you can’t blame Merson for predicting another defeat on this occasion, but some of his comments are quite ridiculous really.
Here’s Merson’s full prediction for tomorrow’s game via his weekly column on Sky Sports, including his rather over the top comment about Saturday’s game:
“A brilliant result for Gary Megson at Spurs and they really should have won it with Salomon Rondon missing that sitter at the end.
“So I am going to go for West Brom to win this as Newcastle were all over the shop against Watford – welcome to the Premier League now, four defeats on the trot.
“I am not exaggerating, Watford could have won 8-0! Newcastle are all over the place and I am going to go 2-0 to West Brom.”
As we’ve said, his prediction is hard to argue with given the contrast in West Brom and Newcastle’s performances over the weekend, but to honestly claim that Watford could have won 8-0 on Saturday is silly really.
3-0 did not flatter them, but we ended up actually having the same same number of shots (12), with them having four on target to our 2.
Merson must be enjoying our recent slump. Here’s hoping we see a much needed response at West Brom tomorrow.
As much as I think Merse is a *** it’s hard to argue with him really. How many times Gray and others went through and failed to get a shot on target, against a team with a top striker we could have had a hiding.
I’m praying for a good striker coming in January regardless of whether we get taken over.

The coke head is right, we could have been hammered by a team playing really good football and if they had a finisher…
Rafa is trying to keep the players up, but that was shocking…

EIGHT though?!
They didn’t have that many clear cut chances. Five or six at a push, but to say eight is just silly.

The quality of chances created for Richarlison, Gray, Docoure etc were clear cut. I don’t think there could have been many complaints if they had tonked us by 8 – they managed 3 without a top notch striker on the pitch so it could have been so much worse.
