NUFC fans furious as TV cameras expose Wayne Rooney’s nasty off the ball incident during Everton’s win at SJP

Well, well, well. Newcastle fans are not happy after TV cameras have highlighted Wayne Rooney’s off the ball elbow against Matt Ritchie during Wednesday’s defeat to Everton – a challenge that wasn’t even noticed by referee Martin Atkinson during the game, never mind met with any sort of card.

It may all sounds very bitter of us (he got the winner, he wasted time on countless occasions at the end and they won), but the incident below does not look good on Rooney and has every right to leave us pretty inensed.

I remember there being some reaction inside St James’ Park after the incident occurred, but on second viewing, there’s a very strong argument that Rooney should’ve gone for this.

Here’s the incident:

A pretty clear and very late forearm smash on Matt Ritchie here. Nowhere near the ball and eyes only for Ritchie. Lucky for him the ref’s eyes were elsewhere, however that’s little consolation – especially given Jonjo Shelvey saw red later in the game.

Here’s NUFC fans reaction to the footage on social media:

Fans aren’t wrong. I honestly struggle to see how this isn’t any worse than Mitrovic’s elbow on Lanzini that saw him retrospectively punished by the FA and banned for three games.

Will Rooney receive the same punishment? Doubt it.

As opposed to being in the shadow of the only club that matters on Merseyside. Bitter much?
