North-East report claims Benitez will attempt ‘ambitious double loan deal’ for Chelsea & Liverpool duo

According to the Northern Echo, Newcastle will attempt to pull off an audacious double deal in January by lodging loan offers for Chelsea’s David Luiz and Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge.

Do I believe these will come off? No (especially Luiz!). Do I think it’s the right approach next month? Without a doubt.

Given our league position, uncertainty off the field and Benitez’s potential lack of budget, the signing of quality players on permanent deals looks highly unlikely – so I’d encourage Benitez to use his contacts and do his best to bring in some much needed quality by any means necessary.

Tuesday’s talk of a loan move for Luiz were laughed off by fans, and whilst there seems little to no chance of this one coming off, it seems that Benitez is set to try his luck regardless.

He will have friends at both Chelsea and Liverpool from his stints at both clubs, so as ambitious or unlikely as these deals may seem, he will be looking to make the most of his contacts.

Interestingly, the Echo had the following to say when discussing Benitez’s alleged mindset towards survival and our potential January business:

“Rafael Benitez accepts Newcastle’s hopes of avoiding relegation will be heavily influenced by the calibre of the players they can recruit next month”

It’s a simple and obvious statement to make,  but it’s so true. Audacious loan deals like this are without doubt our best chance of bringing some much needed quality into the club this winter.

Don’t get me wrong, a deal for Luiz seems outrageous and one for Sturridge will be rated as debatable too, but in our current position, the signing of unused ‘top 6’ players makes a lot of sense and are made possible via loan deals.

Possible options such as Michy Batshuayi, Luke Shaw, Daniel Sturridge and David Luiz would all cost north of £20m on permanent deals – so you can see why ambitious moves in the loan market make so much sense in our current position.

He wants Premier League experience and proven quality and we could well look at sparingly used players in top 6 sides to give us exactly that. Luiz and Sturridge may seem unlikely and even unpopular (with some), but you can see the sense behind it all.

Let us know your thoughts on this potential approach in January folks. Is there any ambitious loan deals you’d like to see Benitez attempt next month?

  1. Sturridge is on £120k p/w. Ashley won’t sanction a loan deal for those type of wages. Liverpool won’t leave him anyway in January without 100% of wages paid + a loan fee.

Ings on loan would be more realistic.

Yep, fair comment and one I agree with. Still, worth having a look. There’s a chance on loan, there’s no chance on a permanent deal.
