Some more frustrating news on the transfer front for Benitez today, with the Chronicle revealing that we look set to be unsuccessful in our attempts to sign Danny Ings on loan – with Liverpool now indicating that he will remain on Merseyside this month.
After a long spell out with several major injuries, Ings has played very little football over the last few season and I’ve seen quite a few fans appear to be underwhelmed over the possibility of him arriving on Tyneside.
It would be fair for fans to question his lack of form or proven fitness after so long out, but you get the feeling that beggars can’t be choosers when it comes to who we’ll be able to bring in up top with month.
The Chronicle state that Ings was one player Benitez saw as a possible ‘solution to our goalscoring problems’, however the NUFC boss will ‘move on to other targets’ according to their report today.
Who could those ‘targets’ be? Tough to say in our current predicament (Rafa doesn’t even know how much he has to spend!), but names like Troy Deeney and Islam Slimani have been thrown around over the past few days.
We shall see. It’s hard to hold out too much hope that the right man will arrive up top, but you’d have to hope Ashley will buck his ideas up and give Benitez what he needs to at least keep us up. Risking it at this stage would be criminal.
