Sky Sports reveal NUFC have ‘discussed’ a potential move to bring former striker back to St James’ Park

An interesting transfer story has emerged this afternoon, with Sky Sports reporting that Newcastle have discussed the prospect of bringing Andy Carroll back to St James’ Park – however claim that Rafa Benitez ‘is not keen’ on the move.

Despite scoring twice in a win over West Brom last week, the 6ft 4′ Gateshead born forward has endured a frustrating spell with the Hammers this season. A January move therefore seems possible, but it seems Benitez isn’t sold on the idea.

Here’s a snippet from Sky Sports on the story they’ve reported in the last few moments:

“Newcastle have held discussions about the possibility of bringing Andy Carroll back to the club this month, according to Sky sources.

“But, despite holding internal discussions about a potential move, Sky Sports News understands Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez is currently not keen on the prospect of signing the West Ham forward.”

Interestingly, they claim that Carroll has been mentioned in ‘internal discussions’ at the club, however it seems he is not a player Benitez is ‘currently keen on’. Perhaps Rafa feels he could not justify paying that sort of money for a player whose fitness levels can rarely be relied upon?

If true, it’s hard to blame him. As much as I’d love a fit and firing Andy Carrol back on Tyneside, his injury record over the years have been awful.

Since this was claimed by Sky Sports, the Chronicle’s Chris Waugh has had the following to say on Carroll’s potential return to Tyneside:

“Andy Carroll is someone who Newcastle have discussed in the past and he is a player Rafa Benitez rates but for now it looks like they will look elsewhere – most likely abroad.”

This seems about right, with Rafa likely to find better value abroad, but this is a very interesting transfer story nonetheless.

Would you like to see Carroll return to the club this month?
