Newcastle 3-1 Luton: The Mags march into the 4th round of the FA Cup – goal highlights

We were made to fight for it, but two poachers goal from Ayoze Perez and a well worked move finished off by Jonjo Shelvey saw us see off a battling Luton side in front of a superb 47,000 crowd at St James’ Park.

Firstly, a hat tip to all those Luton fans who made the trip today. Over 7,000 made the 250 miles trip. I’ve never seen an away support fill level 7 of St James’ like they did today. A superb effort and a decent showing by their team too.

Now to Newcastle. Rafa fielded a strong team (as promised) and despite us not really getting out of first gear in the first half, we found ourselves 3-0 up! As seen below, Perez was alive in the six yard box to prod home the first two, however our second was a lovely move, slotted home calmly by Jonjo Shelvey:

Luton pulled one back just 4 minutes into the second half and made a game of it in the end, but it was relatively plain sailing in the end, with us keeping our lead at two goals despite a poor display in the second.

A few observations. It was the first time we’ve seen Merino and Shelvey start in a while. They both look comfortable in possession, but I noticed today that they are both keen on coming deep to pick up the ball. They made be our two most talented midfielders, but unless we have more of a natural number 10 who wants to come looking for the ball off them (Perez isn’t that man) then I feel they’ll struggling to get us going from such a deep lying position. They both put in decent shifts, mind.

On the subject of Perez, his two goals today mean he’s bagged in consecutive games for the first time in a few years for NUFC. He was alive in the box for both and made a decent burst forward for the third goal, but his all round play aside form this was pretty poor all game. I really don’t see him as a natural number 10. He’s too often on the fringes of things, and the conviction and quality (or lack of it) behind most of what he does often fails to convince me. A good number 10 will probably get more touches of the football than any other player on the pitch and constantly demand the ball. Perez most definitely does neither. I don’t mean to have a dig at the bloke after a two-goal haul and 3 goals in 2 so far this year, but he needs to offer more in that role for me.

Woodman made his first start for NUFC and had a mixed time of it. He took a cross confidently in the opening exchanges, made a decent stop in the second half and looked to have a good kick on him, however he wanted a bit too much time to clear his lines on more than one occasion and was very nearly caught out. He was partly at fault for their goal, being rounded as he rushed out, but it was good to see one of our brightest talents finally get a chance. He got a good receptions as he ran out towards the Gallowgate and will have gained some valuable experience from that. Hopefully he can secure a decent loan move this month and kick on from here.

Great to see us get back to winning ways at home and give the St James’ Park crowd something to smile about after a woeful winless run at home recently. Into the 4th Round we go with the outright odds for the Toon to win the competition hovering around 50/1 if you were to place bet at 888sport.com and 66/1 at most other bookies.

Finally, Lascelles limped off and was replaced by Isaac Hayden at centre-half on the half hour mark, but the early signs are that it was just precautionary. Thank god!

A sensational 47,000 crowd, a strong team played and a much needed win at St James’ Park. Who said the romance of the FA Cup is dead? Onto Swansea we go!

  1. The way the fixtures fall meant we could play a strong team. We have a full week before Swans, then a week before City and 11 days before Burnley. 2 home games and away to City make a pretty easy January in terms of travel and preparation time.

Not sure if there is another FA tie in the middle of this, but hopefully we will play at home again.

  2. I put this up on the last thread, but I think it’s relevant-

I know it was Luton and we were expected to win, but I don’t think we can overlook just how big a Home win is – even more so that it was with the first team (pretty much).

It’s been a while since those players have heard the atmosphere of the home fans when the team plays well and wins. Thats got to have felt good and hopefully will spur them on to experience it again afew more times this season.

  3. The other thing for me was Perez goals. How often do we see him in those positions – furthest forward.

I know it’s a weaker opponent, and usually he’s a good 30yds further back worrying more about defensive duties.
But against Stoke & again today he’s shown that he’s better offensively and can score those goals.

  4. So Lpool sign Virgil for £75m but sell Phil for £146m – i reckon they can still manage to get a replacement with the £71m like.

  5. Swansea is a must win. Then the fixtures fall nicely for us because City is pretty much a write off and we will probably play an ultra defensive team. Then we don’t play Burnley until the 31st. That gives us plenty of time to shift a couple of players and bring in a striker. Whether that will happen is anybody’s guess.

However, it does mean we have the full transfer window to do something.

Sharpy, even at that price it is a good deal for Barca. I don’t think he is worth it but it will allow them to rest Messi. Lionel wants to play every game but they have to persuade him that at age 30 it will prolong his career if he allows Coutinho to play against the **** teams. There is just no way he can continue to play 60 games a season.

I see it as not really buying Coutinho but keeping Messi fresh for the important games.

  12. There’s not much to write this morning, I guess yesterday went as expected – in fact a few even predicted 3-1 (I bottled a bet a 10/1 ?). I was confident of the win, it was the exact score that put me off.

I think yesterday was a definite banana skin. While Luton are league 2, they are top & in good form – and our home form isn’t great.

Rafa says he wants a good cup run, and I’m sure he does. But I think yesterday was more about keeping momentum for the Swansea, and also try to get our home form addressed.

If we can get 3 home points against Swansea, I think that would give me real confidence that, whilst we will remain in the bottom half of the league, we won’t get dragged into those bottom 3 spots.

A see spurs want 300m for kane The same price jabba wants for the toon. Crazy

He will have to move though, he’ll never get a PL medal with Spurs lets be honest. I know Big Al stayed with us but he had already gotten a PL medal with Blackburn. Kane loves it at Spurs but if he has real ambition he’ll have to move on, £300M is a stupid price but I’m not at all surprised with it as it’s the way the game is going and Levy won’t want to lose him .

  15. I don’t know who buys Kane though. Spurs won’t want to sell to an English rival – and who pays £300m?
So who abroad?. I think his physical style doesn’t suit the Spanish or French leagues.

I can only see his contract running down and he either leaves for nowt, or Spurs sell him for way less than £300m coz he won’t sign a new contract & they won’t loose him for nowt.

  17. The prices are no surprise now but it really does go to show how limited we are under the current ownership. The longer Jabba owns the club the further and further we will be behind. That just makes it less likely anybody will buy the club for the price he wants because the further behind we are, the more it’s going to cost to catch them.

I think the 4th round is at the end of January (27th?). The draw is tomorrow 7pm.
I thought it was a refreshing change to play a near full strength team, it respected the opposition, it silences the likes of Gary Neville, no-one died (Lascelles being taken off as a precaution). But also, Swansea, Bournemouth and today West Ham all now have 3rd round replays. We don’t and didn’t want to extra travelling and distraction of a trip to Luton. Far better to put out a good team and get through to the next round on the day!

Ice – it needs to be a definitive meeting either way. I know Cashley wants an extra £50m – I know Mandy wants the relegation clause in the deal (or I think I know as all the reports suggest that).

There is going to have to be some ground given either way, but they have to decide that this week. If they can’t meet somewhere in the middle, walk away and let’s get on with it with whatever money Ashley will hand over.

This won’t get done until we know what division we’re playing in. It’s clear Jabba is a gambler and he has a valuation and if reports are to be believed he’s already come down from £400m to £300m. She’s right in my opinion not to pay that considering our precarious situation.

Kim mate, I started to believe your theory now. Ashley does look like he has no intention to sell for me. Amanda looks like the more anxious party to get the deal done. Ashley may sense it and is trying to take advantage of it. Anyway, if he does not sell and does not strengthen the squad, he will get what he deserves. I think he will sell if Newcastle stays in Championship for some time. We bounced back too quick in the last two drop. Lucky him.

Rafa’s problem is he cares too much. If he doesn’t care or he is less capable, Ashley may start getting worried. Last time when Toon relegated, the winter window was not like this, right?

Rafa – Amanda looks most anxious based on what?. What have you seen that makes you believe that?.

Look Ashley is a **** poor football club owner & a bit of a ***** as a bloke. But he isn’t some kind of international con man who can pull the wool over the eyes of those he does business with.
Let’s give Amanda a bit more credit here I think. The woman has dealt with some of the richest people on the globe. She has brokered some huge deals including the City deal.
If she thought a deal couldn’t be done or that Ashley was trying to mug her off, then she would have walked along time ago.

Sharpy, I think Amanda cares about Toon more than Ashley, although she is still a outsider. She proposed to aid the winter window but Ashley turned it down. Ashley can come back from his vacation to continue the negotiation but he chosed to extend his vacation, in this very key moment for Toon Army. That is why. He does not care at all. Any person who is involved in Toon Army, cares more than him.

Then how do you explain Amanda wanted to help funding the winter transfer only been turned down by Ashley? What is the reason it could be other than caring about the club? As a business woman she would love to see Toon relegates and buy in with a much cheaper price, isn’t it? But it seems she does not want that way. Yes I think she cares. One business man is different from the other. Chelsea owner is also a business man, so is liverpool owners. I don’t disagree they want to make money, but on the other hand they also want to do well on football front. We call that “ambition”. Ashley is a business man with zero ambition on football front. That is the difference my friend.

Kim – after 2 failed transfer windows last Jan & this summer, you would definitely think he would look and reacted more pissed off in his pressers wouldn’t you. But he does always answer with a rise smile and shrug of the shoulders.
Whether that is coz he knows there is something going on in the background – or he’s at peace with the fact that the transfer window will go badly again, he will do his job, then leave for another club in the summer.

If not, I would recommend it. It’s basically about youth football through professional clubs – looking into the fact that less than 1% of our youth team footballers actually make it & why that is. It actually shines a light on much more than that.

Sham – I thought what was good about it was that it wasn’t done in a bias way. It showed it from multiple angles & the effects it has. The youngsters, the parents of the youngsters, and the clubs.

What bothered me was that these clubs pick up and put down KIDS like a product. They can spend their childhoods thinking they are going to make it – a lot of the parents buy into it & think their futures are sorted. Then when they are only 13/14 they get dropped – and that’s literally it – you aren’t good enough, we don’t think you’ll make it, we don’t want you, don’t come back.

Sham – totally agree mate. I’m a big fan of rugby & it’s been used so effective in that sport for years now. It’s mad that football is so far behind.

I can’t remember who said it now, but one of the pundits said the other day – the standard of refereeing hasn’t got worse, the standard of deception has got so much better (he said cheating like).
But I would tend to agree with that to be honest. I don’t think the refs are that bad, but I do see a lot of players going down far to easy and turning to the ref as they do – looking for the freekick or penalty.
THATS what’s spoiling football imo, not VAR – and if VAR comes in and stamps that out, well it won’t be needed as much & we will get proper games of football.
