I can’t see it happening for several reasons, but yesterday we saw some pretty big claims surrounding the future of Jonjo Shelvey, with the Daily Express suggesting he was ‘close’ to a move to West Ham in an exclusive.
Since then we’ve taken to Twitter to gather some pretty interesting reactions to the rumour from both Newcastle and West Ham fans.
Here’s what some of our own have had to say in response to the ‘news’ yesterday, with it highlighting just how many sit on either side of the fence when it comes to the talented but untameable midfielder:
Some very interesting comments. It seems quite a few wouldn’t mind selling him, but just not at that price and in these circumstances. I’d have no faith we’d get a replacement under Ashley so I’d avoid for now.
Now to West Ham fans, with several we found seemingly keen on the idea of Shelvey becoming a Hammer:
Shelvey would actually be a good signing imo. Passes the ball effortlessly well and has a good shot on him. Exactly the sort of player we need in terms of what he offers with the ball. #whufc The cons are he can be a loose cannon at times but overall should be good

Would be very happy with Jonjo Shelvey, West Ham fan who will add that extra bit of creativity and will compliment Obiang well. #whufc #coyi

I genuinely don't understand how some fans are unhappy over the potential signing of Jonjo Shelvey. He is easily an upgrade on what we currently have.
I really don't know what or who some of you expect us to sign… #WHUFC #COYI

Jonjo Shelvey would be an excellent signing for us, whenever noble doesn't play out midfield is shocking. Desperately need another solid prem CM! #WHUFC #COYI

A real interesting mix of comments.
It’s pure speculation at this stage, but it’s hard to ignore such a strong claim.
Personally I don’t see it happening for three reasons. 1) Why would we sell to a relegation rival? (doubt West Ham would play ball over Sakho/Carroll/Hart) 2) It would be criminal under Ashley to cash in and expect a replacement (which we would need!) and 3) £12m seems way too low in this day and age. He’s a 25-year-old former England international and despite his flaws, he has undoubted ability.
Where do you stand on his potential exit folks?
I think he would be a better player at West Ham, than under Rafa if that makes sense.
Also he wants to leave, West Ham is his club…So off you go son…£20m

yes 12m doesn’t get you much these days.. but he is on 80k/week…
the extra 8m just pays for 2 years of his wages… naturally he isn’t going to be going for 20m, no one will be interested at that price

Doubt he would play under rich new owners but best we have right now so I would keep him for anything less than £25m. He may well want to go to his home town club and if he does let him go in the summer.
