Could Benitez be about to make a move for West Ham’s Javier Hernandez?

Sky Sports have confirmed today that West Ham will listen to offers for Javier Hernandez – the striker Rafa Benitez was all set to sign over the summer according to Alan Shearer.

Hernandez joined the Hammers for £16m over the summer, however the Mexican has failed to impress David Moyes and looks set to be moved on this month.

Given Alan Shearer’s interesting admission here on Match of the Day just a few weeks ago, it makes us wonder if Rafa Benitez could be about to step in?

“He wanted to bring players in.

“I know he had Javier Hernandez and Tammy Abraham ready to come in.

“Those deals were pulled at the last minute which is why, with 10 days or so to go, he had to spend £5m on Joselu to bring another body in.”

In reality, this still would be a difficult deal for NUFC to pull off. He’s said to earn over £100,000 a week with West Ham, but the fact Shearer knew we had him ‘ready to come in’ over the summer makes me wonder if there’s a deal to be done here.

There was a feeling that they wouldn’t sell to relegation rivals, but with Diafra Sakho looking set to sign for Crystal Palace (a side below us), this may not be the case.

Financially this one might be difficult, but Benitez’s interest in Hernandez is clear. A swap deal for Jonjo Shelvey has been mentioned, but time will tell if Rafa is able to reignite his interest in the 29-year-old.

He’s failed to impress this season, scoring just four so far, however he could be a short-term solution for NUFC and another goalscoring option up top. We shall see.
