During a passionate rant on Match of the Day last night, Alan Shearer has suggested that the main reason NUFC fans want rid of Mike Ashley is due to his chronic lack of investment – picking out his inability to break our 13-year-old transfer record as a classic example.
A point well made from Shearer, who is aware as much as any that Ashley’s reluctance to spend is crippling the club. As he rightly points out, EVERY other Premier League club in recent years has broken their transfer record –

Spot on from Shearer.
It’s perhaps even more alarming that Ashley’s not given us a record signing when you consider just what £17m plus gets you these days. A deal for Andre Gray (£18m) or former Chelsea youngster Nathan Ake (£20m) would’ve seen our transfer recorded smashed this summer, yet they signed for Premier League rivals Watford and Bournemouth instead – something us NUFC fans have seen all too often during his tenure.
The fact we’ve had so many ‘Championship’ squad members playing at City yesterday also sums it up. NINE who started yesterday were playing in the second tier last season, and the other two (Manquillo and Joselu) were Premier League rejects at Sunderland and Stoke.
Time for Ashley to act. Back Rafa in the final week of the January window and get our club sold to a new owner capable of taking us where you can’t.
Shearer you are supposed to be unbiased. Don’t forget, a billionaire, can squash, a tight bottomed millionaire, and a supremely failed manager, of a mediocre team.
