A realistic view – takeover and transfers

A fan-written piece by Neil Langthorne who sums up his thoughts on takeovers and transfers in this short but to the point piece – is Mike Ashley willing to take this much of a risk? Unfortunately, he thinks so..

The toon faithful are united in their demand for change, a new owner. Mike Ashley is a successful business man and unfortunately his business strategy is at the heart of every decision.

]If he spends his millions on new players, where is his financial gain? He won’t increase numbers through the turnstiles, we have a full house every game. He won’t get any more money for the club and I believe he is willing to gamble on Rafa keeping us up, without a big spend. There lies the problem.

At some stage Rafa will leave. He is loved on the Toon, but will demand a club that shares his ambitions and we fall well short.

To date I haven’t seen any proof that Amanda Staveley has the financial backing to buy the Toon, yet alone meet our ambitions or indeed Rafas.

Since Rafa arrived, I have rarely doubted the players commitment, but we are beaten by teams with more quality. It’s very simple, NUFC lack quality in the squad, it’s glaringly obvious up front.

Good premier league players cost £20M + with the premier league now a playground for the mega rich.

Let’s keep the faith, hope Rafa can keep us in the top flight and someone with REAL financial clout and ambition buys into the Geordie dream.

An honest assessment from Neil who clearly worries about Ashley’s lack of ambition and his ability to take big risks. The only thing I would say in response to Neil asking if there’d be financial gain for Ashley if he spends millions on new players is this – if we went down, his asset (NUFC) would end being worth half of what he’s currently asking for it. He needs to spend £20m on a new striker, but failure to do so could see him lose over £150m if relegation occurred.
