Former NUFC star launches incredible attack on Ayoze Perez – way over the top or what he needed?

Former NUFC full-back Warren Barton has taken to Twitter to blast Ayoze Perez, saying the Newcastle number 10 is ‘not a NUFC player’ – also suggesting that he’s only one of the club’s longest serving players because ‘no one will have him’.

Some may say this is what he needed to hear to give him a kick up the backside following a frustrating few seasons at St James’ Park, however I found his comments to be quite over the top and, at times, a little uncalled for.

This all came following our 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park on Sunday, with Barton picking out Ayoze Perez for criticism after being left so unimpressed by our attacking play.

Not only did Barton suggest that players like Perez need to ‘have a look at themselves’ (see below tweets), he said ‘I’m not having him’ as an NUFC player – also claiming that he’s probably only been at the club so long as ‘no one will have him’!

Don’t get me wrong, Perez was back to his frustrating old ways on Sunday and only picked up a 4 in our post-match player ratings, however this seems too strong from Barton and, at times, way over the top.

Perez has been going backwards on Tyneside and hasn’t developed into the player we hoped he could be after his promising start to life at the club, but at 24 he still has the best years ahead of him – even if he does need to start picking things up.

He works hard and is actually our joint top scorer on 4 goals. Does that mean he can’t be criticised? Definitely not. 4 goals is hardly ground breaking and I also feel he needs to up his game, but I think Barton has been a tad too strong with some of his comments here.

  1. Barton is a pundit – NOT a journalist (like yourself) and so not worth paying any heed to. Barton gets paid to be controversial, not intelligent or thoughtful. He even got his grammar wrong (not “his not a NUFC player” but “he’s not a NUFC player”), but Barton doesn’t care, that not what his (oops) he’s about, he just wants to draw attention to himself as a smart-****, loud-mouth.

On another matter, Olly, what do you make of the report Rafa intends to have an internal discussion about the transfer business – looks to me like he is setting up the board to have to take responsibility for undermining his role as Manager, thus enabling him to show due cause for cancelling his contract without having to pay it out. Ouch for Ashley, who must have been thinking he was getting one over the Spaniard – promising him support, but finding loop hole after loop hole to not deliver – perhaps Rafa’s English isn’t as good as Ashley’s, but his understanding of the game and perhaps of the law appear to be far superior. 😉

  2. Barton is spot on. Perez has not progresses since he arrived. What happened to the heady days when he was farcically linked to Barca? Oh yes, theyprobably scouted him and realised how poor he is.
