An interesting reaction from the former Mag who is never far away from an alternative opinion or two – although I can’t help but think he’s got a little carried away by Jonjo’s performance on Sunday with this one!
Here’s what Barton had to say when speaking on talkSPORT’s breakfast show earlier this week, stating the following when arguing his case for Shelvey to Arsenal:
“I think he would be – this is going to sound mad – when I watch Arsenal and what Arsenal need, I think if somebody could teach Jonjo the role, that first receiver with that range of passing, that was what Xhaka was brought in as. Xhaka is too stiff for me.
“I think if somebody teaches him to hold in the middle of the park, somebody teaches him a bit of discipline in terms of his tacking and temperament, I think his range of passing could be ideal for somebody like Arsenal.”
Yes we saw Shelvey put in one of his best performances in a black and white shirt in the 1-0 win over Man Utd, but I think he’ll have to put in this sort of display on a regular basis before a club like Arsenal could come calling.
On his day he’s a brilliant midfielder, with him possessing undoubted technical ability, being one of the best long range passers in the league when on song, however we haven’t seen that nearly enough this season for Joey to be suggesting he could earn a move to the Emirates.
Let us know your thoughts folks – he might look mightily impressive in the clip below, but I think Barton’s got a little carried away after seeing him perform so well on Sunday..

I’d love to know what Arsenal fans make of this!
