Huge bullet dodged for Benitez as NUFC’s summer target faces ‘serious criminal accusations’

Some incredible news coming from Spain today, revealing that Ruben Semedo – a player Benitez very nearly brought to NUFC in the summer – has been arrested after an ‘incident’ inside his home whereby he allegedly ‘tied up’ and assaulted a man.

This isn’t the first time he’s been in trouble since his nightmare spell in Spain. Since making a summer move from Sporting Lisbon to Villarreal, the Portuguese U-23 international has been arrested THREE times.

He was arrested for attacking a man with a bottle in October last year, was investigated after threatening somebody with a gun in a club just last month and today it has emerged that he is said to have assaulted a man before ‘locking him in a room’.

The Mirror state that Semedo and the other men being questioned then went into the victim’s apartment and stole money and other potential blackmail material.

“The victim was apparently left with bruises and an ankle injury when he arrived at the police station to report the crime.

“There is also an accusation that a gun was involved in the incident.

“It is alleged that either Semedo or one of his associates fired a gun on two occasions to try and intimidate the victim.”

Now, I know what you might be thinking. ‘So what? We were linked with so many players over the summer, so you may wonder why this one seems so relevant, however Semedo was a player who, at one stage, looked all set to sign.

It was Portuguese reports that were initially pushing to story of his potential move to St James’ Park, however Sky Sports and the Chronicle soon got onto the story, confirming he was in talks over a move to Tyneside back in June.

It was suggested at one stage that we had a £12m bid accepted, however he ended up joining La Liga side Villarreal.

I an many other NUFC fans were disappointed to see us miss out on the highly-rated Portuguese defender back in the summer, but I must admit I’m pretty relieved we did after seeing what a loose cannon he’s been in Spain – not forgetting that fact he’s also been injured more than he’s been fit!

The phrase bullet dodged is often used, however it couldn’t be more relevant on this occasion!

  1. This is the third dodged bullet in quick succession with Sturridge – off injured within 3 mins of his second WBA start, Mangala out for the season after 4 or so appearances for Everton and now this. Could our luck be changing? Heres hoping so.
