Ex-Liverpool star Fernando Torres has shared a fascinating insight into Rafa Benitez’s approach to man-management, revealing how he once signed his hat-trick ball with how many times he’d lost the ball opposed to writing a message of congratulations!
Classic Rafa. An old school coach who keeps his players on their toes by reminding them of what they could’ve done better at every possible opportunity, with Torres explaining how this approach always motivated him to improve.
Here’s what Torres told MARCA, reflecting on Benitez’s unique but effective approach to man-management:
“I remember that I was playing phenomenally. I’d just scored a hat-trick and everyone signed the ball.
“They put ‘you’re the best’ or ‘congratulations’. Rafa Benitez put ‘today you lost the ball 8 times!’
“It was his way of motivating you to improve.”

Rafa was the man who brought Fernando Torres to England back in 2007, and this brilliant story perhaps gives an example to show just how he pushed to former Liverpool forward to become one of Europe’s most-feared strikers.
What a bloke.
