BT Sport pundit and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard claims Newcastle United are a ‘Championship team with a Premier League manager’, stating that we would be bottom of the Premier League if Rafa Benitez wasn’t in charge.
Gerrard then suggests that he on sees Rafa staying at the end of the season if things are ‘sorted out upstairs’, stating that there needs to be a takeover or ‘big change’ at the club to keep him – even if he does have a huge connection with the fans.
In reality, many people will probably agree with Gerrard’s assessment of where we’d be without Rafa, however I am not completely sold on this idea that we are a Championship team. On paper, is Burnley’s squad any better than ours? If it is, it’s marginal, yet they are 7th in the league and flying.
I’m not blaming Rafa for this as he’s had his hands tied by Mike Ashley for the most part, but I don’t buy the idea that we have a squad as woeful as some of these pundits make out:
Some extraordinary stuff from Gerrard afterwards. Where would #nufc be without Rafa? "Bottom. They're a Championship side with a Premier League manager".
