Jamie Carragher suspended by Sky – and his comments about Papiss Cisse spitting have not aged well

Ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has been suspended by Sky Sports after being filmed spitting on a 14-year-old girl – just three years after he slated Papiss Cisse for his infamous incident with Man Utd’s Jonny Evans in 2015.

As shown below, the Monday Night Football pundit was caught on camera spitting towards a young girl and her father after Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford on Saturday:

The dad had been goading the former England international, but his ‘unacceptable’ moment of madness has got him in deep trouble, with Sky confirming earlier today that he has been suspended from his punditry duties.

Ironically, Carragher wrote the following In 2015 for MailOnline after former NUFC striker Papiss Cisse was caught spitting on Man Ut’d Jonny Evans – an act that got him banned for seven games himself:

“It’s the worst thing that can happen on a pitch”.

“It is vile but let me assure you now – I would have preferred Lucas Neill to have spat at me the day he broke my leg in September 2003.

“I was spat at once in my career. It came during a UEFA Cup game against Celta Vigo in 1998 and the player in question was a Russian midfielder called Aleksander Mostovoi.

“I was shocked more than angry when he did it because I couldn’t believe what had happened.”

“Is there a list somewhere of names who are ‘that type’? It is a stupid thing to say. It’s not about his character.

“It’s about whether he had a moment of madness, deliberately or not.”

Carragher has had the following to say in defence of his actions during an appearance on Sky Sports today:

He’s clearly genuinely sorry, and can’t quite believe what he’s done, but he really has shot himself in the foot here..

  1. Title not amended.

It still says he’s been sacked – never let the truth get in the way of a good story

  2. Amazing isn’t it.

Fans stand on the terraces every week hurling abuse at the opposition.

Gestures, names, even throwing things. Mob mentality rules and is perfectly acceptable as long as its the fans doing it to the players.

The article even states that the occupants of the car goaded him 2 or 3 times before the incident.

Not to mention the fact that they were deliberately provoking him and taking a video, presumably hoping something like this would happen.

Taking in off the pitch and into the street is simply not acceptable.

Behave like scum – expect to be treated like scum.

I’ve no sympathy for them. As for Carragher, he should have known better, but should not be sacked for it.

  3. Put yourself on a pedestal and you have to be prepared to be shot down when you turn into a yob. Caught in the act, time to say goodbye apology or not.
