Spanish report reveals the ex-Liverpool star Benitez could try to sign for NUFC this summer

According to Spanish outlet AS, Rafa Benitez could bring Fernando Torres to Newcastle United this summer, with the 34-year-old striker confirming earlier this week that he will be leaving Atletico Madrid at the end of the season.

The former Liverpool forward enjoyed some of the best years of his career under Benitez and Anfield many years ago, however there’s been several reports emerge over the past few months to suggest they could be reunited on Tyneside before he hangs up his boots.

AS claim that both Newcastle and Celtic are ‘potential destinations’ for the striker, although I wouldn’t bank on it. I bet Benitez is an admirer (just as he was with Reina), but I very much doubt it’s high on his priority list or even a possibility.

He may have bagged 10 goals and 7 assists last season and has 7 during his bit-part role for the La Liga giants this season, but I just don’t see Newcastle being a match for him or him being a match for Newcastle right now.

He’s 34, will demand big wages, will only be capable of playing a limited amount of games and is well past his best. Benitez likes experience, and we do lack that, but I don’t see this being anywhere near a priority of Rafa’s given our search for new strikers this summer.
