“He’s one of the best” – The player Matz Sels can’t believe Benitez plays ‘so little’

Speaking to the Belgian media this week, NUFC loanee Matz Sels has admitted how surprised he is to see Chancel Mbemba play ‘so little’ under Rafa Benitez – believing he is ‘one of the best defenders at NUFC’.

This all comes from a recent interview which saw him address his future at Newcastle, with him admitting that he has not closed the door reviving his career under Rafa Benitez.

Later in the interview, however, he admits to being baffled by Benitez’s failure to select Chancel Mbemba, stating that the Congolese defender is one of the best at the club.

Here’s what he had to say about the former Anderlecht defender when speaking to SportFoot:

“Mbemba, it’s a whole different kettle of fish. For me, he’s one of the best defenders at NUFC. Why does he play so little? I don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes.”

There’s clearly something about Mbemba that Benitez doesn’t like (language barrier and failure to follow instructions has been mentioned), but it is a surprise to see him consistently miss out on matchday squads.

He’s failed to be included in Rafa’s squad over the last 12 gameweeks, so this must be tough to take for a player of his ability.

What do you reckon folks? Has Benitez treated Mbemba harshly and do you believe he is one of our best defenders?

  1. He makes too many mistakes and Rafa prefers ball playing CBs which he isn’t. No real mystery but still a good player.

  2. I think Mbemba could do a job as a defensive right back alternate to Yedlin. Perhaps when we are looking to hold a lead. He’s not the tallest as a cb but as a utility defender you could do worse. He got a couple games at left back when Dummett was hurt, so not sure why he wouldn’t be in the squad at all. Definitely better than Manquillo imo.

  3. The reason he does not get picked is his communication skills . His English is not good and it has been reported before that because of the language barrier Benitez gets fustrated with the player . He has problems with carrying out the instructions Benitez trys to coach into him , its a shame because he is a very good defender that could become world class imo.
