‘He’s a great player’ – Report reveals the striker Benitez would ‘welcome the chance to sign’ this summer

According to the Daily Mail, Rafa Benitez would welcome the chance to sign ex-Liverpool striker Fernando Torres this summer, with the gaffer describing to soon-to-be free agent as a ‘great player’ who he has ‘lots of happy memories with’.

The 34-year-old has spent the last four seasons back in La Liga with boyhood club Atletico Madrid, however he recently confirmed that this season would be his last with the Spanish giants.

A move to the MLS seems his most likely destination this summer, but Craig Hope (the Mail’s North-East correspondent) has insisted that Benitez would ‘welcome the chance’ to sign the striker who enjoyed some of his best years under the Spaniard at Anfield.

Here’s what Rafa had to say when asked about the striker this week:

“Fernando is a great player. He’s an icon, an idol at Atletico Madrid and I have lots of happy memories with him,”

It seems a long shot and a deal Benitez isn’t expecting to come off, but it’s one he’ll be watching this summer incase the striker just fancies one more crack at English football.
