Jamaal Lascelles has admitted that he’s ‘really happy’ on Tyneside and ‘loves’ playing for the club – stating he is fully focused on on Newcastle United and is not taking any notice of reports linking him with a move away this summer.
After a monstrous season at the heart of our defence, the skipper has earned some well deserved admirers, with the likes of Chelsea, Spurs and Everton being linked with big bids to prize him away from St James’ Park this summer.
He’s having none of it, however.
Here’s what he’s had to say to Sky Sports:
“When you’re flicking through Twitter or people say there’s rumours about this, that and the other you’re aware of it but I don’t take any notice,’
“‘m a Newcastle player, I’m happy here, I’m the captain and things are going really well. You hear about rumours, but I’m just concentrating on Newcastle. There has been a lot of talk and rumours, I don’t buy into any of it,”
“I concentrate on my football. I am really happy. I am tied down to 2023 with my contract and as far as I am concerned I love playing for Newcastle .
“I just want to keep this club climbing as high as we can.”
A brilliant response to the rumours from Lascelles and one that really does help put me at ease when it comes to his future at the club this summer.
Benitez committing may be essential if we want to keep him at the club in the long-term, but he certainly seems fully focused on all things NUFC right now.
He leads by example on and off the pitch and should only get better under Benitez’s guidance. Almost certainly our player of the season and our rock at the back – let’s hope that, like Rafa, he can be with us for many years to come.
