According to a ‘source inside’ player agency SEG, Newcastle are one of three clubs that have ‘made contact’ to sign highly-rated Dutch international Quincy Promes – the Spartak Moscow winger who topped the scoring charts in Russia this season.
Interestingly, this is believed to have come from a ‘source’ inside the players Amsterdam-based agency ‘Sports Entertainment Group’ (SEG). It could be purely to drum up interest in their star man this summer, but it could be
The 26-year-old talent has had an outstanding season from the left-wing, bagging an impressive 21 goals and 10 assists this season, however he’d not come cheap. It’s claimed he’ll cost £22m – a fee that would smash our current club transfer record.
After confirming both Roma and Tottenham were also in the running to sign him this summer, here’s what they had to say about Rafa Benitez’s interest in the forward, claiming we’ve scouted the winger twice this year:
“Newcastle United have also checked up on Quincy as they look to strengthen their attack after a surprisingly good season. Rafael Benitez is an admirer of the player and Promes has been scouted here for Newcastle twice this year. Promes would not be bothered by Newcastle weather.
“London, Newcastle, Rome. For €25million Quincy Promes will be landing there before the summer is out.”
It’d be an ambitious move for a talented winger ready to make the step up to the Premier League (he very nearly joined Southampton in January), however it would seem strange if we’re pursuing a big money deal for him when a similar fee would surely secure the signing of Kenedy?
Like anyone who’d cost in excess of £20m, I have serious doubts, but he’s another to add to the list of potential targets if a deal for Kenedy isn’t possible.
Almost as obvious as Michael Owen’s brochure.
