Sky pundit Paul Merson has hit the nail on the head when discussing Jonjo Shelvey’s England hopes, sarcastically stating that we’re going to win the World Cup this summer if Gareth Southgate thinks he has 7 or 8 midfielders better than Jonjo Shelvey!
It’s rare that us Newcastle fans agree with him, but this is a brilliant way of putting it and I couldn’t agree more. There’s no way there’s enough talented English midfielders out there to warrant Jonjo being kept out of that squad.
Here’s what he’s had to say:
“Shelvey has to go to Russia.
“”If there are seven or eight midfields better than Jonjo Shelvey in this country, we’re going to win the World Cup!.”
"Shelvey has to go to Russia, if England have 7 midfielders better than Jonjo Shelvey, we'd win the world cup".
For once I find myself agreeing with Paul Merson. #NUFC pic.twitter.com/xkD6XJSyyo

This isn’t actually the first time the Sky pundit has sung Jonjo’s praises, calling him the ‘best passer of a ball in England’ last month and having this to say about him back in March:
“Shelvey deserves a chance. No one else passes the ball like him.
“Jonjo Shelvey has the best range in the league in my opinion. Even Jack Wilshere doesn’t have his passing range.”
Let’s be honest, he’s a bit of a wolly and will probably never be popular in the eyes of NUFC fans, but he’s got it spot on about Shelvey here.
If only Gareth Southgate could see it.
