Newcastle offered the chance to sign ex-Liverpool star – a deal that could tempt Benitez?

According to Turkish outlet ‘Fotomac’, Rafa Benitez has been offered the chance to sign Fenerbahce’s Martin Skrtel – the experienced centre back Rafa first brought to Liverpool over way back in 2008.

It’s a logical link to make, but this may just have some legs this summer.

The 33 year old was linked with a move to Newcastle United and a possible reunion with his former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez just last year, with Rafa having tried to lure him to Napoli a few seasons ago too.

Skrtel was heavily linked with Rangers and linking up with former team mate and new manager Steven Gerrard. However, the move has broken down over wage demands and a move to Newcastle could make sense.

The no-nonsense Slovakian is earning an alleged £4m per season from Fenerbahce and club’s board are hoping to sell him this summer, with Fotomac claiming he’ll be available for a ‘cut-price’.

He would offer plenty of experience and depth to our young side, especially when Mbemba moves on. Any move would also further test Rafa’s power on Tyneside over transfers as we all know Ashley doesn’t lightly sanction players aged over 30.

Lascelles and Lejeune, so I wouldn’t expect him to be brought in to start, but adding a player who has played in the Premier League previously can only help us – and he seems a relatively low risk.

The low fee would save cash to fund areas we need help the most – like the signing of Kenedy and a striker or two,

Would you take him? Or do you feel he’s past it?
