Former Man Utd reject confirms NUFC offer – A baffling move by Rafa Benitez

Former Man United stopper Tomasz Kuszczak has revealed that he received an offer to join Newcastle on loan in January – a deal we’re lucky to have missed out on after ending up signing Martin Dubravka later that month!

It’s a very strange one is, this. Yes Benitez clearly wanted a goalkeeper in January, but was a 36-year-old Kuszczak really better than what we had in Elliot and Darlow?

I’d have preferred to see us recall Freddie Woodman from Aberdeen in all honesty – and I’m sure most NUFC fans would have too.

Speaking to Polish newspaper Przeglad Sportowy, here’s what the Birmingham stopper has had to say about our January approach:

“In the winter transfer window I had a loan offer Newcastle, and Derby also approached me,”

“However, Birmingham, said that I should stay at the club. My contract is still valid for a year, but the situation has changed a little, because after the season I received a green light to be transferred.

“I am waiting for a signal from the people who represent me. Managers already know that a transfer option has appeared. I am calm, if there are no good offers I will wait for a year, then I will be a free agent.”

If this was a transfer rumour then I’d struggle to believe it, but you’d think there’s some truth in this given it’s from the horses mouth.

To think we tried to sign him in January shows just how desperate Rafa was for a goalkeeper, mind. He’s the wrong side of 30 and spent most of last season on Birmingham’s bench – a side that narrowly escaped relegation from the second tier.

Very odd, but this just shows how different things could’ve been. Thank god we ended up with Dubravka instead!

Not at all, but even he will be relieved this one didn’t happen given we ended up with Dubravka!
