Joey Barton winds up Sunderland fans with brilliant dig during first interview as Fleetwood boss

In an amusing interview from the ex-NUFC midfielder, Fleetwood Town manager Joey Barton has admitted he’s looking forward to testing his ‘tactical wits against the might of Sunderland’ – a sarcastic comment that’s not went down too well with Sunderland fans.

After a recent ban from football for breaching betting rules, the 35-year-old has recently been confirmed as Fleetwood Town boss – his first role in management and one that will see him face Sunderland in League One this season.

Here’s what he’s had to say during his first interview with the club:

“League One is a very, very competitive league. It is an incredibly tough environment and you have some massive clubs in League One next season.

“The likes of Sunderland who will still be on a parachute payment structure. So I am looking forward to, as a former Newcastle player, testing my tactical wits against the might of Sunderland.”

He just couldn’t resist could he!  You can see him smirk as he talks about the ‘might of Sunderland’ and it seems Sunderland fans aren’t too impressed with the ex-NUFC midfielders back-handed compliment.

Here’s a few reactions to his amusing comments from Sunderland fans on social media:

“Joey Barton will never succeed as a manager. His lack of class and total blindness to how stupid he is (he quotes Orwell you know) will show more than it ever has.”

“He will be sacked or in jail by the time they play us”

“Can’t wait till he gets sacked in November having not won a game”

“Yep just forget about the other 44 games, Joey.”

“Simply can’t wait for Joey Barton to get total abuse at the Stadium of Light next season. He’s a top class w****r and deserves every bit of hate that’s thrown his way”

“Why are the local SAFC reporters giving Joey Barton even more publicity for an irrelevant comment? Job done on the sly dig as far as he’s concerned.”

“Keep dreaming loser. We are going to embarrass you in front of your own fans.”

He dangled the carrot and they well and truly bit!
