Agent drops hint after claims that NUFC have made a move to sign £11m midfielder

Following claims from Spain that Newcastle have made a late attempt to pip Sevilla to the signing of Swansea’s Roque Mesa, the players agent has hinted that Rafa Benitez is someone who ‘knows him well’.

The 29-year-old joined Swansea for £11m last summer but has spent the last 6 months on loan with Sevilla – the club we appear to be rivalling for his signature this summer.

Given Mesa’s agent – Luis Alonso – is responding here to rumours that Newcastle and Fulham had made enquiries for the midfielder, his comments make it pretty clear that Benitez is the Premier League manager who ‘knows him well’ and that the ‘Serbian’ interest comes from Slavisa Jokanovic (Fulham’s manager).

Here’s what he’s had to say:

“There is someone in the Premier League who knows him well.

“There’s also European coaches, from Serbia, who know what he can give,”

Make of that what you will, but it sounds to me like his agent has acknowledged interest from both ourselves and Fulham in response to the rumours here.

It sounds very likely the the former Las Palmas man will return to La Liga this summer and complete a move to Sevilla, but it does sound as though Rafa Benitez has made a last ditch attempt to bring him to St James’ Park.

  1. Wow – so now we’re looking at someone who couldn’t get into the Swansea team?????

  2. Hopefully agent talk to boost his options.Mesa struggled in the Premiership last season and centre midfield is one of our stronger areas.Priority is at least one quality striker through the door.Id consider Patrick Bamford who is still young and should cost under 10m.
