According to MARCA, Real Sociedad have now won the race to sign Mikel Merino, with the midfielder choosing a move to the Anoeta Stadium despite interest from several other La Liga sides.
Athletic Bilbao had been the club who looked most likely to pinch Merino this summer after long-standing interest, whilst Sevilla and Real Betis had also been strong linked, however reports in Spain this morning claim he’s chosen to join Real Sociedad.
Despite being on holiday in the USA, MARCA claim that the 22-year-old’s representatives have met with a number of club’s in recent weeks to assess his options.
The report does state that a fee is yet to be agreed, however they insist that this should not be a problem, making us presume that Sociedad are prepared the pay the £10-£12m asking price that’s been touted.
Presuming this is true, one thing that could yet hold up the deal is our need for a replacement before he departs, but it does look like the end is nigh as far as Merino’s career at NUFC is concerned.
It’s a shame as he’s an undoubted talent who has what it takes to succeed in England, but, when it comes down to it, there’s no point keeping a player whose head is elsewhere.
Let’s just hope a replacement arrives and a decent one at that.
