Ex-NUFC star completes surprise £8.5m move to Roma after receiving ‘vile’ abuse at former club

Former Newcastle defender Davide Santon has completed a surprise £8.5m move to Roma, coming just a few months on from receiving shocking death threats at former club Inter Milan.

The 27-year-old signed at St James’ back in 2011 for a fee in the region of £5m (almost half the amount he’s just cost Roma seven years on), spending four and a half years at the club before returning to Inter Milan in 2015. His return to Inter did not go to plan, however.

He played a fairly bit-part role over the last few seasons and has been on the end of some vile abuse from Milan ultras, with his girlfriend admitting that they received death threats after he made two big mistakes which led to a late Juventus comeback in the final few weeks of last season.

As a result he’s been on the look-out for an escape route from the San Siro and he’s found quite an impressive one in the form of Champions League semi-finalists Roma.

It’s fair to say Inter fans do not rate Santon and there’s been quite a reaction from them on social media after news that he’s cost Roma just shy of £8.5m.

Let’s hope his move to Rome goes better than his return to Milan did – for he and his family’s sake.
