Long-term target undergoes medical elsewhere despite admitting NUFC were “very interested”

Despite confirming Newcastle were ‘very interested’ in signing him just a few weeks ago, Red Bull Salzburg playmaker Valon Berisha is now on the verge of a £7m move to Lazio – with him being pictured completing his medical in Italy today.

This comes less than 24 hours on from the Telegraph’s (Luke Edwards) claims that Newcastle were eyeing an ambitious double swoop to sign both him and Kenedy.

It’s clear that he’s a player we’ve been watching – with the man himself confirming our interest recently and the Chronicle mentioning how we’ve scouted him for 18 months now – however it seems we’ve either failed to step up our interest, or he’s just opted for a move to Italy instead.

This is a bit of a frustrating one really. Not only does this seem a real bargain for a player rated as highly as himself, but he said earlier this month that the Premier League would be a ‘dream’ move – suggesting he may have chosen us if we’d actually upped our ‘interest’.

He’s 25, he’s excelled in the Austrian league (13 goals and 11 assists last season), he’s got quality AND the making of a real Rafa Benitez player, so that coupled with his extremely low sale price (£7m) makes me wonder just why we didn’t bother.

Considering we haven’t got a great deal to spend and we need a number 10, it seems a little odd that we didn’t bother with Berisha after such extensive scouting.

Moving on!

  1. Who comes up with this stuff?

A guy who has never been on our radar has gone somewhere else.

    That’s not a story!
