TalkSPORT claim NUFC are ‘prepared’ to meet £18m asking price to sign World Cup playmaker

According to talkSPORT, Newcastle are interested in a deal to sign Uruguayan international Giorgian De Arrascaeta – the Cruzeiro playmaker who featured during this summer’s World Cup.

The story reckons that Celtic are also interested, but claim that we’re now ‘prepared to match the Brazilian side’s £18million valuation’ for the highly-rated 24-year-old.

Here’s what talkSPORT have had to say about our alleged interest today:

‘Newcastle and Celtic are monitoring Uruguay’s Giorgian De Arrascaeta.

‘The Cruzeiro playmaker played twice for his country in their march to the World Cup quarter-finals and is believed to be keen to try test himself in Europe, having spent his career in South America so far.

‘De Arrascaeta started the first game against Egypt and came on against Russia, but is believed to have caught the eye despite not quite fitting Uruguay’s 4-4-2 system, with both the Magpies and the Scottish Premiership champions leading the chase.

‘Rafa Benitez, the Newcastle boss, has made adding a no.10 a priority this summer and is prepared to match the Brazilian side’s £18million valuation of De Arrascaeta.’

We may be after a number 10 this summer but, as always, it’s best to take this one with a pinch of salt.

The Ki Sung-Yueng deal proved that some signings can come totally out of the blue, involving players we’re yet to be linked with at all, however I’m struggling to believe we’d break our transfer record on a player who’s only ever played in South America.

Benitez has confirmed recently that he’s keen to sign ‘two or three’ attackers before the window closes, but I’m not holding my breath for this one!

Here’s him in action for anyone who’s yet to see him play – and I’m sure there’ll be a few who fall into that bracket!
