According to some ‘breaking news’ from Sky Sports in the last few moments, Newcastle are now ‘in talks’ to sign Salomon Rondon from West Brom – a laughable story given this has been common knowledge for several weeks now.
Rafa’s been credited with an interest in Rondon for over six weeks now, with The Mail claiming he was keen to meet the striker’s £16.5m release clause way back in the middle of JUNE.
A month and a half on and the deal may well be edging closer, but the fact Sky seem to think it’s big news that we are now in talks – despite these having clearly taken place for several weeks now – is pretty laughable really.
Here’s their big bit of ‘BREAKING’ news shared on their transfer centre in the last few moments:
‘Newcastle are in talks with West Brom to sign Salomon Rondon, saySkysources.
‘The Venezuelan has a £16.5m release clause and Rafa Benitez sees him as a replacement for Aleksandar Mitrovic.
‘Newcastle have stepped up theirs interest following the Serb’s transfer to Fulham, which is close to completion.
‘The move for Rondon could involve Dwight Gayle going in the other direction – either in a straight loan swap OR a player-plus-cash deal.
‘Gayle was an unused sub in last night’s goalless draw with Porto.’
A deal may be edging closer, but to claim breaking news about ‘talks’ when we’ve clearly been discussing this transfer for several weeks is quite amusing. And it’s not been lost on NUFC fans on social media:
Sky are actually embarrassing..
We've clearly been in talks with him for weeks. When I read 'BREAKING' I presumed we'd at least agreed a deal with @WBA ! #nufc https://t.co/Ycr7n2uAtA

The only semi-interesting part of this is that Sky suggest it will be either a straight loan swap OR a player plus cash swap deal that involves Dwight Gayle going the other way.
Aside from that, nothing’s really changed it seems.
Let’s hope we can see progress on this deal as soon as possible, though. With Mitrovic on his way, you’d suspect the signing of another striker is a top priority now.
No not at all! Sky sports only adds news when it’s getting real. On the other hand the Daily Mail for example will provide seemingly fresh news/speculation but almost always without any substa nce

Anyone else think selling mitro is going to come back and bite us on the **** (maybe twice) this season??

What planet do you come from.

No…….not at all.
He’s not a premiership standard striker and he can’t./ won’t do as hes told by the gaffa. I wouldn’t employ anyone who didn’t conform to company regs.
We’ll see how many chances he puts away in the prem.
My guess is he wont be nearly as prolific. IRWT.

If it was ‘getting real’ wouldn’t the ‘BREAKING NEWS’ be that we’ve now agreed a deal?
We’ve been in talks to sign him for weeks mate..

Declared an interest weeks ago probably started talking when we were getting close to Mitro leaving.

Lenny.
You’re paying Olly?
Seriously?

Using your logic Olly no paper should print anything about our transfer dealings.
Lets face it – when bloggers are linking us with literally hundreds of players 99% of it is pure speculation.
Previously the talk of Rondon has been almost entirely pulled out of someone’s **** with no grounding.
If this is an ACTUAL link with a reliable source then its hardly laughable.
I would also suspect that if no cash was available we’ve been waiting for Mitro to go before serious talks could commence.
