According to the Shields Gazette’s Miles Staforth, Jonjo Shelvey will take no part in Newcastle’s opening training session in Braga this morning – coming as a slight concern just days after we were rocked by the long-term injury to Florian Lejeune.
No official update has been provided on his absence, with the NUFC reporter stating he is still ‘not sure’ why the midfielder has missed out.
Here’s his tweet from the club’s Portuguese training base in the last few moments, confirming that Jonjo has taken no part in the first session upon arrival this morning:

He could be tired, ill or feeling a minor strain from Saturday’s pre-season work out against Porto, but let’s hope that’s all it is. We can NOT afford to lose another key player to injury after the Lejeune blow – especially when there’s just 11 days left to do business!
Interestingly, Dwight Gayle IS involved and has trained as normal despite pace gathering over his alleged swap deal with West Brom’s Salomon Rondon. As we saw with Mitrovic, things can change VERY quickly, so don’t be surprised if he jets back to the UK in the coming days/hour.
Nevertheless, here’s confirmation of him with the squad ‘as normal’ from Lee Ryder:
