NUFC linked with shock move to re-sign former defender – Report

According to Spanish outlet ‘MARCA’, Newcastle are now interesting in bringing former full-back Kevin Mbabu back to the club – just a year on from letting him go.

The story claims that we are now one of several clubs who are now considering a move for the Swiss defender, with Heliopolis, Valencia, Real Sociedad, Girona and Fulham all said to be keen.

The 23-year old showed real promise on the odd occasion he was given a chance at Newcastle, however he allowed to return to his homeland 12 months ago, joining BSC Young Boys on a permanent deal following an impressive spell on loan in 2016/17.

To say he’s impressed since making that move is an understatement. He’s helped Young Boys to their first league title in over 30 years last season and almost earned a call-up to Switzerland’s World Cup squad as a result, racking up 2 goals and 8 assists during their outstanding 2017/18 season.

It seems highly unlikely to me that Mike Ashley and co could swallow their pride and go back in for a player they sold on the cheap just 12 months ago, but Benitez does need full-back cover – and Mbabu can operate down both flanks.

Would you take him back?

  1. Silly to sell him in the first place, and some of us shook our heads at that decision! We do tend to unwisely let some players leave at times, instead of developing them.

  2. Congrats for the website! NUFC support from Spain. Mbabu would be a good signing; but my favourite man for the LB role is Nico Tagliafico (Ajax), no doubt about it. He can play as LB and also as central defender. Newcastle must get the argentinian and Fede Fernandez (Swansea) too.

  3. Maybe Rafa will miss a quicker, agile defender, Schar is good on the ball but slow, Fernandez is tall and slow too. Both of them are good central defenders but not the quickest. I hope Newcastle can get Rondon, he is the right profile to play along with Perez/Muto. West Brom are playing the waiting game with their key players (Dawson, Chadli, Gibbs, Rondon, Rodriguez) but some of them probably will leave the club.

  4. In the game against Chelsea he had Pedro in his pocket all game. When standing him up he stood half a yard closer than most would, confident that he was quick enough to prevent Pedro trying to run past him, and then took advantage of his proximity to get a foot in.
I was quite astonished that they let him go. I did read some talk of his being unsettled in Newcastle. If this was due to changing room unpleasantness then there would be little chance of his return.
