Sky Sports have confirmed in the last few moments that Federico Fernandez is now on his way for a medical at Newcastle United – however they claim that a loan deal for Barcelona’s Marlon Santos is now off.
A £6m fee has been agreed for Fernandez, meaning Rafa looks to have finally got himself a centre-back to fill in for the injured Florian Lejeune, but the news on Barcelona’s Marlon confirms he was NOT been granted a work permit today.
Understand Newcastle’s move for Barcelona defender Marlon Santos is off after the player failed to obtain a work permit. Fernandez jetting into Tyneside instead.

Lee Ryder’s has also commented on the two deals in the last few moments, confirming ‘mixed news’ for Newcastle – with Fernandez set to sign but a deal for Marlon Santos now all but over.
Mixed news. Fernandez is on his way for talks and medical. Unfortunately does not look so good on Marlon Santos. #nufc

Given both are centre-backs, the bad news on Marlon isn’t so much of a blow providing we do seal the signing of Fernandez before the 5pm deadline.
Now to sign a left-back – although we’ve not got long!
