Derek Wright shares “incredible” insight into Rafa Benitez & the “phenomenal” work he does

During George Caulkin’s brilliant piece with the long-serving NUFC physio, Derek Wright has admitted that Rafa Benitez’s attention to detail is ‘incredible’ – saying his ‘meticulous planning’ is the key behind our ‘phenomenal’ injury record over the past two years.

Injuries here, there and everywhere have so often hampered our seasons over the past decade, however Rafa Benitez’s has made his own luck in that department since being appointed manager of NUFC back in 2016.

Wright has been in a job at Newcastle United for an incredible 34 years, working under 28 different managers, but it seems Rafa’s ‘eye for detail’ is up there with the best he’s witnessed in his time with the club – with that going hand in hand with our vastly improved injury record.

Here’s what Derek’s had to say to George Caulkin when offering an insight in an interview with The Times:

“We have a manager now whose eye for detail is incredible.

“The injury record since he’s been here has been phenomenal and that’s down to his meticulous planning, when to use or rest players,”

Wright also praised Benitez’s understanding of the club, its people and our tradition, highlighting just how much the Spaniard ‘gets it’:

“At the same time, he has a depth of feeling. It means a lot. Some people have worked here who wouldn’t have a clue about tradition, about Geordie people.”

Here’s hoping for another relatively clean bill of health this season.

We’ll need it given how thin our squad is in areas!
