Kevin Mbabu’s career continues to go from strength to strength, with the full-back not only receiving his first call-up to the Swiss national team last week, but also seeing his team qualify for this year’s Champions League group stages.
After a loan spell away from St James’ Park in the 2016/17 season, Rafa Benitez decided to cash in on the 23-year-old last summer, with Mbabu sealing a permanent move to Swiss side BSC Young Boys.
To say he’s done well since returning to his homeland is an understatement – making many wonder why on earth we didn’t give him more of a chance (especially when he performed well when given his rare chance in our first team).
Last season he helped Young Boys to their first title-winning campaign since 1986 – bagging 2 goals and 8 assists along the way – and he’s now helped them qualify for the Champions League group stages; with them drawn with Man Utd, Juventus and Valencia as a result!

Not only that, he’s now been rewarded with his first call-up to the senior Switzerland side – joining Newcastle centre-back Fabian Schar in their latest squad:

It’s easy to say in hindsight, but I will always wonder why we didn’t give this lad more of a chance..
