TalkSPORT’s Adrian Durham takes on NUFC fans on Twitter..& makes an absolute fool of himself

Many of you will know Adrian Durham – the talkSPORT presenter who’s footballing opinions regularly frustrate and baffle fans.

He’s often got a lot to say, but he’s been shown up on Twitter during an exchange with Newcastle fan account @NUFC_Index over the weekend – with several other Toon fans finding flaws in his argument.

He claims Rafa Benitez must change his ‘negative’ approach against the top clubs – forgetting that this is a manager who had a better  record against the ‘top sides’ last season than anyone outside the top 6!

He started by criticising our approach during the 2-1 defeat at home to Chelsea two weekend’s ago, but praised Bournemouth for ‘having a go’ on Saturday – despite them losing 2-0.

Here’s the exchange; resulting in him being proven woefully wrong:

NUFC Index: “Durham said: “We knew Bournemouth wouldn’t come here and ‘do a Rafa’ ” Our result was better. Fact.”

Adrian Durham: “Bournemouth played two up top had a couple of great chances and didn’t park the bus at all. Plus Bournemouth were away to Chelsea, nufc at home. Meantime Cardiff were massively entertaining.”

Dan Nolan (NUFC fan): “It’s not Rafa’s job to entertain you, it’s his job to keep us in the league. Losing by 1 goal to Chelsea and City and not destroying our goal difference might just do that. We finished 10th last season on goal difference.”

Adrian Durham: Cardiff lost by one goal but scored two. I’ve known some strange things in my time but genuine football fans defending negative football after defeat is as strange as it gets in this game.”

Dan Nolan: “Cardiff played Arsenal, they’re not comparable as a team to Man City or Chelsea. We play them next, I presume we’ll be more offensive. We’ll see. Rafa’s not infallible but I trust him and his tactics to get the best out of these players and give us the best chance at staying up.”

Adrian Durham: “Wolves drew with Man City. Huddersfield beat Man Utd. Rafa keeps doing the negative thing and keeps losing, albeit narrowly. So why not change the approach??”

Conor Murphy (NUFC fan): “Terrible journalism. Newcastle took 10 points off the top 6 clubs in 17/18, more than any club outside that monopoly. NUFC also took 14 points in 12 against big 6 when relegated in 15/16 which again, was better than the rest.”

Adrian Durham: “Oh here we go. Stat alert. Bit like saying Rafa’s still brilliant cos he won the champions league with another club 13 years ago. Chelsea and Man City – boring football. No points. ~That’s what this is about. Apparently fans are ok with that.”

The last few lines of this ‘debate’ are brilliant.

A part of Durham’s argument is that Huddersfield beat Man Utd last season after ‘going for it’, but he refuses to credit our wins over the top six last season as that’s bringing up the past.

Later on, ‘NUFC Index’ weighed in with “Huddersfield also lost 6-1 to City this season. We lost narrowly, 2-1. Who’s ‘approach’ was better?”. Needless to say, he did not respond to this one. I wonder why?

You can’t argue with an idiot!

  1. I would have liked to have seen us a bit more offensive against Chelsea at home – not totally gung-ho but pressure them more than we did. I think they look vulnerable at the back with Luiz and Rudiger and are still settling into the new way of playing.
City away, no chance – park that bus for me.

What Durham fails to mention though is that we were also without Shelvey and Ritchie for both games and don’t have quality back up in the squad. If you lack your creativity, what option do you have?!.

  2. Adrian Durham did spend a lot of time in Newcastle, but that doesn’t make him a Toon fan, or exclude him from being an idiot…..:-)

  3. He also plays devils advocate to an annoying degree in order to get a reaction and cause an argument. Shock Jock tactics. Anyone who doesn’t agree with his opinion is wrong.
