NUFC star hints at long-term stay at St James’ Park – but it may only be on one condition..

Martin Dubravka has admitted that he’d like to stay at the club for a ‘long time’ – but hints that it’s Rafa Benitez who would persuade him to do so more than anything else.

Given how good the 6ft 3′ stopper has looked since making the move from Sparta Prague, this is yet another reminder of how important it will be to keep a hold of the Spaniard beyond this season.

If he continues to play as he has been since arriving earlier in the year, we can safely assume that some big clubs will come knocking for his services – and we may not have a leg to stand on when it comes to keeping him if Rafa Benitez isn’t here this time next summer.

Speaking to Slovakian outlet SME Sport, here’s what he said when speaking about his permanent move to the Premier League earlier in the summer:

“I personally enjoy every Premier League duel – and it was very difficult to get to this level,”

“I’m delighted to be catching up – and I believe the coach, Rafael Benitez, will persuade me to stay for a long time.

“The fans also support me a lot. I often hear my name and the exciting chants from the crowd.

“I use it to help me, I try to work hard on my own and give the maximum to the spectators.”

Dubravka is clearly so thankful that the club gave him his big chance in England and has already built up a great rapport with NUFC fans, however he’s one of several players we’d struggle to keep if Rafa left.

If Rafa left, I could see the likes of Lascelles, Shelvey, Lejeune and Dubravka being targeted; serving as another reminder of just how important is that we keep him at the club beyond this season.
