Sky Sports confirm that Matt Ritchie currently holds unwanted Premier League record

According to Sky Sports’ Martin Tyler, Matt Ritchie now holds the record for most away matches without scoring a goal in the Premier League – failing to score in his last 38 games on the road for Bournemouth and Newcastle.

Ex-Mag Georginio Wijnaldum had held the record – going 57 away games without a goal for Newcastle and Liverpool – however he got on the scoresheet during Liverpool’s 2-1 win against Tottenham at Wembley.

It’s worth mentioning that this record account for only midfielders and strikers, but it’s a surprise to hear that Ritchie holds the record given the goal threat he can posses.

Here’s what Martin Tyler has had to say about it all during his latest piece for Sky Sports:

“After 57 away games for Newcastle and Liverpool, Wijnaldum did at last score in the Premier League this weekend to end his draught on the road.

“So that means of those non-defenders still playing, Matt Ritchie now holds the record for most away matches without netting, which stands at 38 for Bournemouth and Newcastle.

“Interestingly, Swansea’s Leon Britton holds the record by a non-defender for most home games without scoring, having gone 80 Premier League matches without finding the net at the Liberty Stadium.”

When you think about it, it does seem that the majority of Ritchie’s best displays have came at St James’ Park, showing a clear area of improvement for the all-action winger.

You know what this means though – a goal at Selhurst Park on Saturday is incoming!

Let’s hope so!
