Aston Villa owners prepare move for Rafa Benitez – but amusing ‘sticking point’ is reported

According to an amusing story in The Mirror, Aston Villa are now considering an ‘audacious move’ for Rafa Benitez following the sacking of Steve Bruce – however they claim Christian Purslow’s presence at the club would be a ‘sticking point’.

After Rafa’s achievements in the 2016/17 season – delivering automatic promotion and the Championship title – I’m sure Villa’s owners are desperate to have him on board; but whether they have any chance of pulling this off is a totally separate matter.

They’re a pretty bid club and one that shouldn’t be in the second tier of English football, but they’ve got another thing coming if they think Rafa’s going to up sticks and move down to the Midlands for another stint in the Championship.

Nevertheless, here’s a snippet from The Mirror’s latest piece:

“Villa sacked Steve Bruce on Wednesday amid mounting fan fury after just one win in 10 matches.

“Wealthy owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens have now tasked new CEO Christian Purslow to secure a high calibre boss before the visit of Swansea on October 20 — their first match after the upcoming international break.

“Arsenal legend Henry was first considered when Villa were taken over in July at the same time as Henry left his TV job with Sky Sports.

“The Midlands club are also considering an audacious move for Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez but his frosty relationship with Purslow, who he blamed for his exit from Liverpool, could be a sticking point.”

The line suggesting that Rafa’s ‘frosty relationship’ with Christian Purslow could be ‘a sticking point’ is an amusing one..

I think there’d be quite a few ‘sticking points’ with this one!

Rafa’s long term future at Newcastle may be in serious doubt, but if Villa think he’s going to walk out on us anytime soon to join them in the Championship, they’d be wrong.

  1. I don’t think he was even thought about. Plus why would he leave Newcastle. There will be rumours of Prince William managing before this is over. It’s ridiculous to speculate really. Best thing for Villa is that Bruce is gone. The financial fall out may affect this club for years to come and it’s all his fault. Who would even want all these 30+ year has beens.

  2. No chance and even if he would consider a move to Villa we are desperate for an attacking manager and that isn’t Rafa, regardless of his impressive track record

  3. The need a longer term perspective than 20 October (lol). They should be content with using the rest of the season to trial and audition several interim managers until they uncover a genuine, undiscovered gem – good number of quality English managers out there, waiting for a chance to step up and prove themselves.
