PLAYER RATINGS: Newcastle 0-1 Brighton

A disastrous day for Newcastle, with us unable to respond to Kayal’s first half goal for Brighton – seeing us slip to bottom of the table after our fourth straight defeat at St James’ Park.

Here’s my thoughts on each player’s performance and my marks out of 10.

NUFC XI – (4-4-1-1): Dubravka – Yedlin, Lascelles, Fernandez, Dummett – Ritchie, Shelvey, Diame, Kenedy – Perez – Muto

STARTING 11:

Dubravka – 5 – Some very poor kicks, with us trying to play short at times when it wasn’t on. Had very little to do and took a few crosses well when he did.

Yedlin – 5 –Struggled to deal with Izquierdo and didn’t find himself in much space whenever he tried to get forward. Deliveries often hit first man too.

Lascelles – 4 – Really sloppy today and not as convincing as he normally is. Dithered on the ball at times and made a few rare errors when trying to be too clever at the back.

Fernandez – 5 – Was looking to play out from the back and push us forward but there was often so little on. Not his best game after setting high standards in his first few appearances.

Dummett – 5 – Put in the odd decent cross when he came around on the overlap, but you can see why Rafa wants a more attack minded left back. Can’t fault his effort but quality was lacking.

Ritchie – 6 – Huffed and puffed but not much came off. Some decent crosses but they were always cut out, with Muto dwarfed by Dunk and Duffy in the middle. He tries his best, but he didn’t have much to work with.

Diame – 5 – Tried to break forward and run with the ball when things got too predictable, however was quite sloppy at times too. Won plenty in the air and had a few efforts on goal – but they were smashed way over.

Shelvey – 7 –  Was the one player trying to create and make things happen. Had a few decent efforts on goal (albeit a few wayward ones as well) and was doing his best to create from deep. Can’t really knock him today.

Kenedy – 7 – Our brightest spark in the final third. Looked more confident and was one of few who had a go at them. Nearly scored from a superb long range strike which flashed inches over. A few silly flicks, with him showing his lack of experience after trying a Rabona a 1-0 down, but one of our best players.

Perez – 3 – Back to his usual self after a promising performance at Man Utd. Missed a huge chance early on and barely had any impact on the game. He should’ve been the one who made way late on, not Muto.

Muto – 5 – Didn’t have nearly as much space as he got at Old Trafford and struggled to get into the game. A few loose touches and missed a big chance with his head in the first half.

SUBS:

Joselu – N/A – Not really on long enough to get a rating, but didn’t really make any impact – with us strangely deciding to stop putting crosses into the box when he came on. Had a long range shot that almost hit the corner flag..

  1. Some of our players appear brain-dead! Crossing when they have two giants against our 2 shorter$e$, playing around going sideways and backwards as the clock ran down…………… 🙄
