As confirmed by MEN, former Newcastle United goalkeeper Paul Woolston is set to complete a surprise move to Manchester United today – just months after being released by Rafa Benitez.
Woolston had been part of our U-23 set up, however it was confirmed that he was going to be released by the club when the 2017/18 retained list was announced in June.
He’s since been taken on trial with Man Utd, and it seems as though he’s impressed – with Manchester Evening News (MEN) claiming that he will sign official with the Red Devils today.
They reckon that he’ll now added to their academy to provide competition for Matej Kovar and Alex Fojticek, so he’s nowhere near first-team level, but the fact such a big club like Man Utd see something in him makes you wonder if it was a mistake letting him go.
That being said, you could argue we have a better young keeper on our hands in Freddie Woodman – who’s still getting nowhere near our senior side despite playing for England’s U-21’s at international level.
