Journalist reveals the prolific striker who is now NUFC’s ‘number one’ January target

According to an exclusive from the Northern Echo’s Scott Wilson, Newcastle United have made Eintracht Franfurt striker Sebastien Haller their number one transfer target ahead of the January window.

This is not the first time Benitez has been linked with a move for the big Frenchman – who has 7 goals and 7 assists for the Bundesliga side so far this season.

Here’s a snippet from Scott Wilson’s big exclusive in the Northern Echo:

“Haller features extremely prominently, and the 24-year-old is set to become the Magpies’ key target over the next couple of months.

“Newcastle have scouted him extensively over the last couple of years, and there is growing confidence that he can be prised from his current German employers, Eintracht Frankfurt, despite having signed a four-year contract when he joined in the summer of 2017.

“A tall, athletic striker, who is a former France Under-21 international, Haller has scored six goals in nine Bundesliga matches for Frankfurt this season, a tally that leaves him joint-third in the German top goalscorer standings behind his team-mate, Luka Jovic, and Borussia Dortmund’s Paco Alcacer.

“Dortmund have been credited with a potential interest in his services, although their attacking riches might restrict his first-team opportunities if he were to switch employers in the Bundesliga. His ability to lead the line would make him ideal for Benitez’s preferred playing style on Tyneside, and it is telling that Newcastle have already scouted him on a number of occasions this season.”

It was reported early in 2017 that Benitez contacted the 6ft 3′ striker when we were pushing to gain automatic promotion from the Championship – however it seems he was unable to convince him at the time due to us being in the English second tier.

The same issue could apply this time around if we’re in the bottom three come January, however he certainly seems like a player Rafa has been tracking for a few years now – and someone we seem relatively hopeful of signing by the sounds of this.

Here’s him in action:
