Is Benitez preparing move to bring Italian international to St James’ Park in January?

According to reports in Italy, Newcastle may now make a January move for Italian international Mattia Destro – with Rafa Benitez now on alert after Bologna’s decision to cash in on the striker in the new year.

Bologna-based outlet TuttaBolognaWeb claim that Benitez was weighing up a move for Destro after missing out on Alassane Plea, and William Jose over the summer, so he may well reignite his interest now he’s been told he can leave in January.

This is not the first time he’s been linked with a move to St James’ Park since Benitez took over, with Destro no doubt being a player Benitez is very aware of from his time in Italy.

Whether he is the answer to our goalscoring problems is a very different matter, however.

He’s yet to score in five games so far this season and managed just 6 goals and 4 assists last year. He has been prolific during his spell with Roma (29 goals in 68 games), however he’s scored just 25 goals in 92 games since signing for Bologna.

He may be an upgrade on Joselu, but he does not seem like the prolific goalscorer we’re crying out for – even if he is available on the cheap in January.
