Mo Diame set for new deal at NUFC – but only on one condition – Report

As revealed by The Chronicle today, Mo Diame looks set to secure a new contract at the club – however he will only do so if he manages to rack up a certain number of appearances this season.

The piece states that a contract extension has already been agreed between Diame and the club – with his current deal set to expire next summer – however this will only be activated later in the season if he plays a certain number of games.

It seems as though he’s well on track with this, so an extension seems likely – despite his struggling start to the new season.

Here’s a snippet from Lee Ryder’s piece on the Senegalese midfielder:

“Mo Diame is set to win a new contract at Newcastle United.

“The Chronicle understands that Diame already has an arrangement with the club to earn an extension and this will be triggered later in the season if he plays a specific number of games.

“His current deal will expire at the end of the season but the conditions of the contract he signed in 2016 mean his future is in his own hands.”

There can be no denying that he has failed to make the same sort of impact so far this season, however I think big Mo deserves this.

He played a HUGE part in our surge into the top ten last season and really did show everyone what he’s capable of doing, with him turning around what had been a very frustrating spell at the club for him up until that points.

He’ll turn 32 next June, so it’s perhaps a change of tact to see Ashley giving such a senior player a new deal, but I think it’s well deserved in the end.

Let’s hope he can rediscover the sort of form he showed over the first half of 2018. Do that and not only will we see the best of Jonjo Shelvey, but we’ll almost certainly stay up.
