First-team duo nowhere to be seen in training – Both look set to miss Huddersfield game

Some concerning news ahead of Saturday’s trip to Huddersfield, with both Jonjo Shelvey and Federico Fernandez nowhere to be seen from the players training session on Thursday.

Shelvey wasn’t even in the squad for the Wolves game and Fernandez limped off at half-time after suffering a calf injury – and it seems neither have shrugged them off as of yet.

Here’s a snippet from the club’s official website:

With DeAndre Yedlin suspended and Federico Fernández an injury concern for the weekend after a calf problem sustained against Wolves, Lejeune’s continued progress is a boost for the Magpies manager. Jonjo Shelvey is also a doubt for the game at the John Smith’s Stadium

Lejeune’s return is a real boost (especially if Fernandez is due to be out for any length of time), however he almost certainly won’t be rushed back. On the plus side, Dummett is back in full training so you’d like to think he’d be able to start on Saturday.

As far as Shelvey goes, both Ki and Diame have formed an impressive partnership in his absence, but they are due a rest – especially with so many fixtures coming our way over the festive period.

Fernandez could be the biggest miss. He’s been one of our standout players this season, and with Lascelles’ looking out of sorts over the weekend we could do with a player of his calm and class back in the side.

  1. Lejeurne is the best player at the club and they have missed his influence, and gives a chance for a superb Schar to move into midfield.

West Ham sniffing around Shelvey again……….Maybe why he is missing.
