This is what Miguel Almiron did to convince Benitez he was the man for NUFC – Report

According to the Chronicle, Rafa Benitez is convinced Miguel Almiron has what it takes to make an ‘immediate impact’ in the Premier League – with him impressed by his ‘work rate’ and ‘excellent’ play ‘off-the-ball’ as much as his ‘skill’ and ‘technical ability’.

Although so many of us are desperate to see flair and exciting new talent arrive on Tyneside, a few are wary that the Paraguayan has only proven himself in the MLS – however the club’s scouting reports appear to have convinced Rafa that he is the real deal.

Here’s a snippet from Mark Doulgas’ latest piece for the Chronicle, revealing just why Rafa and NUFC scouts are keen to get their man next month:

‘Newcastle United’s scouting reports for Miguel Almiron have been glowing about the skilful forward’s work rate – with Rafa Benitez convinced the Paraguay international could make an instant impact in the Premier League if a move is sanctioned.

‘Newcastle have scouted Almiron extensively and Benitez sees him as a good fit at the right age for a key role in his team. As well as his technical ability, scouting reports filed by the Magpies have emphasised that he is excellent off-the-ball, which is one of the reasons why Benitez is so keen to add him.

‘United have been heavily linked with the player and a scouting trip by Steve Nickson recently convinced the player’s camp that Newcastle are serious about their interest.’

Talk of Almiron’s pace, technical ability and skill is exciting, but as we all know, Benitez’s teams are based around following instructions, working hard and doing as much off the ball as you do on it.

Yes we need flare and spark, but it sounds to me like Rafa believes Almiron has the ability to bring energy and electric moments of brilliance.

Now to the hardest part under Mike Ashley – agreeing a fee. Although I suspect the only way we’ll be paying the £20m plus demanded if new owners arrive..

  1. To use coaching-speak, NUFC lack quality in the ‘transition phase’. Pretty organised and disciplined when off the ball but as soon as the ball is won, it is often lost immediately via a bad pass or being weak and dispossessed easily. It would be so satisfying to have someone who can turn and run to get the immediate pressure off the defence and then, possibly, get a move going! Almiron looks like that type of player. Perez has been asked to do that job but, to me, looks best suited as someone who can sneak in and nick a goal later in the move…
