TWO theories behind Mike Ashley’s big takeover claim during THAT Sky interview

Over two weeks on from THAT Sky interview where Ashley claimed a takeover was closer than it’s ever been, we’re now being told ‘time is running out’ for a deal to be done in time for January – with Ashley now away on holiday to make matters worse.

Unfortunately, there’s fears that Ashley has played us all once again, with two theories immediately entering my head…

1 – A ploy to cancel the Wolves boycott (It worked!)

The Wolves boycott was cancelled to give new owners a ‘clear run’ at completing a deal, also meaning Ashley could not blame our negativity on the collapse of any deal. The Ashley interview put fans in a no win position on this one really but unfortunately it’s now impossible to know what impact continued protests would have had on results on the field. We have gained valuable points over this period and do now, remarkably, have more points this season than a the same stage last year.

However, as progress on the takeover appears to have stalled, yet again, it is hard to shift the feeling that Ashley has somehow managed to get away with it, again. It does feel different this time and even Ashley must know the backlash this time would be huge if he doesn’t sell within the next month – and if this ploy to get the boycott cancelled has caused Ashley so much worry, it is good to know we can surely arrange another if needed.

As the Sports Direct share price continues to decrease, the last thing he needs is yet more negative publicity.

2 – An excuse to not spend in January once AGAIN.

An excuse not to spend in January would be typical of Ashley (he hasn’t spent in the January for years) and it would be a case of dejavu from 12 months ago; as PCP and their deal to buy the club ‘collapsed’.

The reason it would be even worse this year though is that this is the last window we have to keep hold Rafa Benitez, he won’t put up with zero investment yet again and is very likely to walk away this summer when his contract ends. He is waiting for investment or a takeover, and rightly wont commit to NUFC unless one of them is achieved. Ashley is harming is own asset by alienating Benitez, once the Spaniard departs our hopes do to – as long as Ashley is still here. Benitez goes, the value of NUFC plummets and fans will walk away in numbers. Surely even Ashley isn’t stupid enough to use this ploy to not spend again…but then again, never rule anything out under this owner.

What is your take on these theories, will a takeover eventually go through (with many journalists telling you interest IS genuine this time) or has this been yet another big Mike Ashley PR stunt?

  1. Well it was a smart way to deflect the flack he’d encountered that very day from MP’s and the London magpie group in Westminster.
Areal curve ball for the sky news presenter who presumably was set to talk about the meeting and possible boycott of Wolves.
He will always move the goal post to scupper a deal, he doesn’t want to sell. If he really did it would be done already, 8 years of trying to sell tells us that.

  2. The problem is, as I see it any potential bidder will sign a non disclosure agreement in order to see the accounts which means no information can be released so all the reports are based on opinion.

  3. This is really sad.

1, Having seen that miserable failure that was the West Ham walk in do you really think that Ashley was at all concerned about the Wolves boycott? It wouldn’t even have registered on his list of things to be worried about. You can talk it up as much as you like but the Magpies Group are nothing. Just a bunch of angry fans spouting off.

    2. Ashley hasn’t spent in the last 3 or 4 transfer windows. He didn’t need excuses then, he doesn’t need one now. What did he spend in the summer? What did he spend last January? Did he run around telling people he was selling? No. Stavely did, but not Ashley.

How deluded or paranoid do you have to be to believe this is a trick? Ashley said a sale by January was “possible” but not “realistic”. Because what he said was correct, and is playing out how Ashley said it would, it has to be a trick?

Ashley has said talks are as progressed as they have ever been, and we know for a fact that Kenyon’s people are carrying out due diligence. Isn’t that enough to be going on with?

Ever heard of a thing called patience?

Dead or alive hes a lyingbastard and even his own mother must dispise him. A sick excuse for a human being.
In a way , I hope this has all been a massive con because the hatred towards him will surely boil over now, even from the 52,000 sheep.

  10. Three clubs have tried to get rid of owners by boycotting matches. Blackpool, Blackburn and Coventry.
Coventry went to the bottom of Division Two and Blackburn and Blackpool to Division One.
You can add us to that list under McKeag. Had SJH not stepped in we too would have slumped to the old third Division.
The other three still have the same owners. It simply doesn’t work and it damages the club badly. The precedents of these three clubs tell you that.
Most of those demanding a boycott don’t even go to games ffs.
We all hate Ashley. None of us are sheep but boycotts don’t work.
Sadly we’re stuck with Ashley until he gets an offer he can’t refuse. That’s the hard truth. Nobody likes it but we’re the reason Rafa came and were the only reason he’s still here. Blackburn, Blackpool and Coventry. Same owners still there but clubs damaged badly. I won’t do that to NUFC. People make their own choices. Attack Sports direct. Hurt him there.
