According to The Chronicle, Newcastle are now in contact with AC Milan over the signing of wing-back Diego Laxalt – however it looks to me like it’ll only happen if they’re willing to let him leave on loan.
The Uruguayan international was outstanding at the World Cup over the summer and sealed a £16m move to AC Milan just 6 months ago as a result.
He’s since failed to nail down a place in their side and could move on in January, but the Chronicle report that AC will demand a large chunk of the £16m paid over the summer – something which immediately casts doubt over a permanent deal given Ashley’s inevitable reluctance to spend in January.
As the article above mentions, ‘no fee has been agreed yet’, but you’d think they’d want over £10m for a player they paid big money for just a few months ago, and I really don’t see Ashley spending big on a player.
We have the ability to sign one player on loan from Europe (having used both our domestic loan deals on Rondon and Kenedy), so it sounds to me like we’ll swerve a potential expensive permanent deal and look to bring him in on loan instead.
He looked the part over the summer and is a player Benitez’s been tracking for years if reports are to be believed so he could be a very shrewd signing – although I really can’t see it being anything other than a loan if Rafa is to get his man.
